"Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise." (V1)
This is not saying that all alcohol consumption is bad, it IS saying that too much is bad. When it fogs your mind, alters or distorts your behaviour and ability to make sound decisions... it is wrong. Ephesians 5:18 tells us to not get drunk. Drunkenness leads to a lot of bad things. Be filled with Jesus instead... let him consume you. He is all you NEED.
Verse 3 says, "It is to a man's honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel." Learn how to live out grace in ALL the areas of your life. Forgive those who hurt you, even if they aren't sorry. Love them when they are unlovable, when they hate you. We were unlovable once.
"Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right." (V11) This makes me think about the way we live our lives.
Does your life reflect God's love? Does it resemble God?
What is on the inside will be noticeable on the outside. When God changes your heart, there is a lifestyle change. Your choices no longer reflect what you want or how to please others. Instead it reflects a change in your heart. It reflects the love and grace God has given to you, the wisdom you are growing in.
Verse 15 made me think about how we live our lives. Finding someone who speaks truth, seeks wisdom and lives their entire life to glorify God in all they do is rare to find, but worth a lot more. A voice speaking out for what is true and right is hard to find.
Treasure the knowledge and wisdom you learn and learn how to really live it out in all you do. be careful with your words and claims.
"A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much." (V19)
This isn't saying to avoid a person who talks all the time... like me (HA)! But it is referring to avoiding someone who talks about others... someone who delights in others hardships. Whether it's about their lack of successes or because of their many hardships... be careful. Do not surround yourself in gossip, do not let it even begin. It will become 'normal' and before you know it you will be the one gossiping. If they talk about someone else to you... when you are not around, you will become that someone else. Stay away from it all.
Verse 22 talks about giving our pain and hurt to God that others have caused. Do not fight back, we talked about this before... it is NOT our battle to fight. Do good to those who persecute you. God is in control and sees it all. He will deal with it.
